Adult Education January Class: Who Was Jesus?
Rev. Nagel is the part-time Pastoral Associate at St. Luke’s Presbyterian Church and a Methodist minister. He has been teaching adult education classes for the past 30 years with a special emphasis on biblical and theological studies. He will lead a 4 week class tackling the difficult question, “Who Was Jesus?”
Over the past century hundreds of books have been written on the subject which variously describe Jesus as a teacher, prophet, liberal, business man, apocalyptic preacher, evangelist, fundamentalist, feminist, liberationist, etc, etc. Unfortunately, many of these books viewed Jesus through the eyes of the author with the result that Jesus in his historical setting was lost. New archeological and historical research in the past five decades has given us insights into the historical reality in which Jesus lived, how he would have been viewed in his own time, and what his message possibly meant. This class will take a look at the gospels through the lenses of this research and try both to understand who Jesus was as a first century Palestinian Jew and what this means for us today.
